The diagnosis of ACM is usually one of exclusion in a patient with DCM with no identified cause and a long history of heavy alcohol abuse. According to most studies, the alcohol consumption required to establish http://metallord.org.ua/releases/search/query/1992 a diagnosis of ACM is over 80 g per day during at least 5 years[9-12]. A repeat echocardiogram revealed normal left ventricular function, with an ejection fraction of 62% by modified Simpson’s biplane method.
Alcohol abuse coinciding with myocarditis was reported in 1902 by McKenzie [26]. The primary treatment for ACM involves complete abstinence from alcohol or other drugs. However, some studies show that moderating alcohol consumption may lead to similar health outcomes. Still, medical professionals have not identified a specific alcohol level toxic to heart cells.
